Changi Airport to Little India, Singapore
Little India
A cultural escapade in Singapore would be incomplete without a trip to the exotic and robust Little India. Encapsulating the Indian culture within this enclave of explosive colors and liveliness, Little India not only boasts temples that have been painstakingly crafted and built in devotion to their deities, but also a variety of authentic, spiced cuisines that leave you salivating and pining for more.
The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple
Built by Indian immigrants back before the Second World War, this temple is dedicated to its namesake: the Goddess and destroyer of evil, Kali. The temple has braced the rage of the Second World War and has remained unscathed. An architecture with the tales of old times built into its walls is definitely a sight to behold!
Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple
One associates goodness with the hopeful flickering of light. Here in the Sakay Muni Buddha Gaya Temple, the 15 meter-tall statue of Buddha is surrounded by seemingly a thousand little lights which are built into the walls. The ingenuity in this gesture has warranted the temple the nickname “Temple of a Thousand Lights”, and the architecture itself is emblematic of a mixture of Buddhist cultures, namely those of Thailand, India and China.
Spicy Trail
Indian food is known for spice-centred recipes and savoury treats that are often deep-fried with herbs and, of course, spices! In Little India, visitors find themselves surrounded not only by history that regaled them with stories of the past, but also with the fragrant scent of Indian cooking.
Tekka Centre
Famed for its surprisingly delicious Indian cuisine, this low-cost food joint also serves as a marketplace for vendors and their sundry stalls, selling anything from snacks to religious paraphernalia. One could not find a more appropriate food joint than to be seated among the Indian enclave, dotted through with patrons of other nationalities, as one savours the taste of Little India.
Kamala Restaurant
Retaining rich traditional culinary tastes, Kamala Restaurant is set up just outside the beloved Tekka Centre and has been known to serve up classic Indian dishes that are relished by even the older generation. For visitors, ordering a savoury thosai, which is a large, flat, folded pancake that is eaten with various condiments, may offer an authentic gastronomic experience in Little India - particularly when one eats with his hands!
